Understanding Food Labelling
Food labelling in the UK
Consumers should welcome the information provided on food labels and packaging. But several different systems have emerged. We'll try to throw some light on this topic in these pages.
The per 100g nutritional panel
The nutritional panel can be found on the back of most packaged foods from dry ingredients to microwave meals. It is often most useful when comparing two similar products.
The FSA's traffic light system
The Food Standards Agency in the UK consulted widely with consumers and food manufacturers to find a simple way of helping shoppers choose their food wisely. The end result is their traffic light system.
The GDA system
The Guideline Daily Amount system is offered as an alternative "front of pack" labelling style. It is preferred by many of the large food manufacturers who claim it is more helpful to consumers.
