Helping you choose healthy food and an active lifestyle

About per100g.com

We can help you take control of your lifestyle

per100g.com can help you make better informed food choices including a wide selection of pre-evaluated recipe suggestions and reviews of commonly purchased food products and ready meals. And we can help you to understand how simple changes in day to day activity can bring significant improvements in your sense of well being.

Is this a weight loss web site?

For the majority of people using this site weight loss and weight control will be a strong motivation. And per100g.com can be a very effective tool in helping you to achieve that goal. But the site is not just a calorie counter. If you choose to use these resources to help you reduce weight then you will see that counting calories is only one part of achieving your goals in a way which can be sustained in future.

Chocolate mousse and two apples have the same calories but different nutritional valueFor example, the picture shows a portion of chocolate mousse and a pair of organic apples. These two foods have the same calorific value. Some weight watching and weight loss resources might even suggest they are equal as foods. But it is clear that they do not have the same nutritional value.

We want to offer a much broader view of nutrition and enable you to gain the best from your food intake. So while a lot of visitors will use this site as an aid to weight loss, for many others the information on food content and food comparisons will be just as interesting and useful. Others still will want to explore the sections relating to exercise and burning calories.

What if I want to change my diet?

Whether you are restricting calorie intake for weight loss or not it is very important to make informed choices about the food and drinks you consume. The word “diet” seems to have been hijacked and changed to mean a short term regime which you start, endure and then finish before going back to your “normal food”.

But that is not how it should be. Your combined intake day by day, month after month is what makes up your real diet. When you are considering making a change to your diet you should ask yourself:

If I make this change will I be still comfortable with it in 3 months time? What about 6 months? How about 2 years from now?

What if the change was to stop consuming dairy products like milk and cheese completely? Or how about a regime which allowed no cereal, pasta or bread? And what about total abstinence from all alcohol?

If you can imagine the change being maintained well into the future then you have a good chance of successfully making that improvement. If you cannot see yourself sticking to it then why set yourself up to fail? Think again. Perhaps a different improvement should be tackled first? Perhaps you need to revisit and strengthen the reasons you were considering a change in the first place?

So how can per100g.com help to achieve a nutritionally balanced diet and lifestyle?

The site is written from the perspective of typical consumers. We know what it is like to stand in the supermarket aisle comparing the nutritional data on two boxes of cereal or snack bars or ready meals. Rather than deciding which one is the healthier choice we are often left puzzling over which one will do least damage to us and our families.

Our aim is to help you gain better understanding about nutrition and exercise so that you can make you own well informed choices. You will learn more about what to eat and drink and get ideas and knowledge about how to burn off more calories every day. We will try to separate fact and fiction in the maze of information that is available in books, magazines, television and the internet.

The three distinct parts

To make it easier per100g.com splits the task of taking control of your diet and calorie burning into three distinct parts. You can see these on the main navigation menu:

  • HEALTHY EATING - choosing a variety of nutritious foods and drinks
  • PORTION CONTROL - consuming them in the right amounts
  • BURNING CALORIES - finding simple and enjoyable ways of burning off calories

By examining a variety of aspects from each of these three areas we aim to help you gain a better understanding of the issues and science behind the choices you make.

As the site builds and develops we will use articles, look up charts, real life examples of meals including a wide selection of pre-evaluated recipes, plus physical activities for differing levels of strength and fitness.

Does this site offer medical advice?

No, the per100g.com site does not offer medical advice of any kind. It does not offer specific information for anyone under the age of 18, those who are pregnant or breast feeding, the elderly, those with identified or suspected dietary conditions, those who are taking prescribed medicines or are under medical advice. Anyone in these categories or who is considering undertaking an exercise regime should first consult with a doctor.

How is the site financed?

The site has been financed by a private individual who wanted to lose some weight and move towards a healthier diet but was appalled by the varied and often conflicting information available. It generates no income at present, save the pennines generated by the Google sponsored links.

In future we hope to expand the services offered to users of this site. Some of those additions will only be available to registered users and some others may only be available to subscribers. To keep up to date with our progress you should register for free now.
